Stage 1

In 2009, Menai Primary School has three Stage 1 classes:

  • Wattle - taught by Mrs Michelle Kay.
  • Hakea - taught by Mrs Joy Heath on Monday and Tuesday and by Mrs Sue Hartman on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Boronia - taught by Mrs Carlin on Monday and Miss Black Tuesday - Friday.

All students participate in class stage ability groups.

English

Activities in these early stages of school develop the children's ability to Read, Write, Talk and Listen. At Menai, the children are involved in Guided Reading and Individual Reading programs within the classroom.

R.A.P. (Reading And Parents) is well underway and the children are steadily progressing. The children will be learning how to write "descriptions" and "information reports", as well as having opportunities to do regular "recounts" in their diary.

Talking and Listening

Talking and Listening is a whole school focus during 2009.

Throughout Term 1 children prepared speeches in readiness for our School Public Speaking Competition.

All classes will continue encouraging students by giving them regular opportunities to present speeches to their peers.

Maths

Activities will include lots of "hands on" and game oriented activities during the study of Numeracy, Measurement and Data and Space, Geometry, and Patterns and Algebra.
